This summer I went to Canada. We packed up the car, and since Spokane, Washington is only a few hours from the boarder, who drove up through Creston, BC up to Ainsworth Hot Springs (we took the ferry across Kootenay Lake).
One of the most interesting aspects of the trip was having a beer with my dinner at a restaurant. I find this funny. I am an American. I live in “the land of the free” where life liberty and the pursuit of happiness are the values that we hold most dear.

Upon returning to the US, I have a new found loathing for the extortion that our government holds upon our state governments. I am 19 years old, and not allowed to drink legally in the United States, my home country.
This isn’t a national law, this is a law which is regulated by local state laws. However, the federal government decides to withhold highway funds from any state which does not conform to a 21 drinking age. In a business sense, this is extortion, and totally unfair to any legal adult whom the government still deems “underage.”
In order to apply for federal funds for college, I have to register with selective service, and any male has to at the age of 18. We risk imprisonment and/or large fines. This means, if congress decides to go to (a real) war, they can issue a draft, and force any male over the age of 18 into the military for service.
I have no problem with that, I love my country, and I certainly don’t have a problem serving if needed. My issue is that my country will let me take a bullet for it, but won’t let me enjoy a nice frosty beer before with my friends before I leave.
I know this is a stupid issue to talk about, however I don’t frankly care if it is stupid, even though I know I won’t care in two years after I am allowed to drink legally (I actually might). I just find it extremely unfair that a country prides itself on the freedom of it’s people, yet both of it’s neighbors have more fair laws towards drinking for it’s citizens.
This does not condone binge drinking, I am talking about the right to enjoy an alcoholic beverage if one chooses. The right that all 18, 19 and 20 year olds do not have. Read the rest of this entry »
